At Emerge Medical & Well Spa, we provide a wide array of different skincare, anti-aging and relaxation services to clients all over Tulsa and beyond. As one of the premier providers of up-to-date and innovative skincare solutions, we also understand that people often have misconceptions about certain treatments. BOTOX® is probably one of the most commonly maligned treatments available.
But, is there really a reason to avoid getting BOTOX® treatment? Is BOTOX® really dangerous? What are the real side effects? In previous blogs, we’ve looked at myths about laser treatments. In this entry, we’re going to bust a few myths about BOTOX®.
It Freezes Your Face
The biggest BOTOX® myth to get out of the way is that it fixes your face in a permanent, emotionless expression. If you’ve told people you’re considering this treatment, you’ve probably had at least a couple of responses relating to a particular celebrity having a “frozen face” from it, and how you should avoid it.
Like many other cosmetic treatments, this myth came from a handful of famous cases of celebrities overdoing it, and is far from reality. In truth, the results of the injections only last 3-6 months. The “frozen” look that people talk about it also a result of overdosing on it. While it does reduce muscle movement, it doesn’t eliminate or fundamentally change it.
Professional treatment will reduce wrinkles and blemishes, but still leave you with regular muscle movement.
It’s Toxic
Another common myth about BOTOX® is that it’s toxic. Unlike the first example, this one is a little less cut-and-dry. While the substance is technically a neurotoxin, it isn’t one that is dangerously toxic in the quantities used during cosmetic treatments. This neurotoxin – called clostridium botulinum – is found in our natural environment, and is inactive in everyday quantities.
Treatment Is Painful
This myth has more to do with your own tolerance for needles more than the treatment itself. The reason that this treatment is so popular is the speed and general painlessness of it. Many people who have had this treatment think of it as something that can be done on a regular lunch break.
This is because needles used in this procedure are extremely fine and small, and cause far less pain and discomfort than a typical shot. Combined with numbing creams, this is why the treatment is often characterized by those who have had it as a quick, in-and-out procedure.
People Who Get Treated Are Vain
This one’s a little harder to tackle since it’s a little more personal. Sadly, many cosmetic procedures are still characterized as an exercise in vanity by those who get them. Again, this is a misconception.
While this treatment can certainly be done for purely cosmetic reasons, it’s also been applied to medical issues such as excessive sweating, chronic migraines, eyelid muscle spasms and much more. Not only that, but minor cosmetic adjustments are not entirely driven by vanity, and looking to improve or retain a youthful look is not something you should feel you have to hide.
