DO I NEED SCLEROTHERAPY?

Sclerotherapy alleviates pain caused spider veins and varicose veins. If you experience any aching, swelling, burning, or cramping in your legs, this treatment will reduce these symptoms. The treatment is also done for cosmetic purposes. By reducing the appearance of your spider veins, you get back to doing the things you love and wearing the clothes you want without feeling any embarrassment.

If you feel any discomfort or embarrassment from your veins, schedule an examination with a physician. During the examination, the physician will evaluate your veins and medical history to determine if there might be an underlying cause of your condition that may require an alternative treatment. To schedule an examination with an experienced physician, contact Emerge.

HOW DOES THE TREATMENT WORK?

During a sclerotherapy treatment, a physician will inject the spider or varicose veins with a special chemical called sclerosant which causes the vein to reduce in size and close. After the injection, pressure is applied to the vein to prevent their return. Some patients wear compression stockings for a few days to ensure pressure is continuously applied.

The treatment can also be performed with a catheter. With this method, the physician guides the catheter and the sclerosant to the vein with a duplex ultrasound. By using a catheter, the treatment is non-invasive and can be used on larger varicose veins, which would otherwise require surgery.

WHAT CAN I EXPECT FROM TREATMENT?

It typically takes a couple treatments to see the results of sclerotherapy. Luckily, treatment sessions are not time-consuming; most only about 30 minutes. After you receive a sclerosant injection, you may experience some pain and discomfort. For some patients, the injection causes a burning or cramping sensation. Although you will be able to walk immediately after the treatment, you should avoid strenuous exercise for at least a week.
