During a sclerotherapy treatment, a physician will inject the spider or varicose veins with a special chemical called sclerosant which causes the vein to reduce in size and close. After the injection, pressure is applied to the vein to prevent their return. Some patients wear compression stockings for a few days to ensure pressure is continuously applied.
The treatment can also be performed with a catheter. With this method, the physician guides the catheter and the sclerosant to the vein with a duplex ultrasound. By using a catheter, the treatment is non-invasive and can be used on larger varicose veins, which would otherwise require surgery.
It typically takes a couple treatments to see the results of sclerotherapy. Luckily, treatment sessions are not time-consuming; most only about 30 minutes. After you receive a sclerosant injection, you may experience some pain and discomfort. For some patients, the injection causes a burning or cramping sensation. Although you will be able to walk immediately after the treatment, you should avoid strenuous exercise for at least a week.
