Using Botox to Treat Hyperhidrosis

Woman receiving Botox injection in armpit

If you live with hyperhidrosis, you know that it can be an embarrassing and unwanted disruption to your daily life. Emerge Medical & Well Spa in Tulsa is here today to tell you that we have a solution for your hyperhidrosis: BOTOXⓇ! Not only can this treatment help reduce wrinkles, but it has been proven as an effective treatment for hyperhidrosis.

Hyperhidrosis

Hyperhidrosis refers to excessive or uncontrollable sweating on the hands, armpits, feet, or face. Hyperhidrosis may not always be related to heat or exercise, and often results in so much sweat that it soaks through clothes or drips.

BOTOXⓇ

BOTOXⓇ is a safe and effective injection commonly used as a cosmetic treatment to smooth wrinkles on the face. A BOTOXⓇ injection is made of a safe toxin that temporarily paralyzes the muscle at the injection site, and has been known to treat symptoms of hyperhidrosis, overactive bladders, neck spasms, and lazy eyes.

Benefits of Using BOTOXⓇ for Hyperhidrosis

When it comes to hyperhidrosis, BOTOXⓇ offers an extremely safe and effective off-label solution to prescription antiperspirants. If you find that your prescription antiperspirants are failing to work, you may be the perfect candidate for this treatment. Here are some of the benefits:

Improved Quality of Life

With a safe and effective treatment like BOTOXⓇ, you can expect to see results that leave you feeling satisfied and positive about your hyperhidrosis. Patients often see improvement in their ability to perform work activities, a decline in emotional damage due to hyperhidrosis, and significantly fewer limitations in social interactions and situations.

Little Down Time

A great benefit of BOTOXⓇ treatment is that you can resume your normal activities right after treatment with minimal discomfort or soreness!

Long-Term Effects

While the effects of BOTOXⓇ injections are temporary, results can last for anywhere from three to six months! And BOTOXⓇ treatments are safe enough that you can follow up on your treatment when it wears off.

Extremely Safe

The professional medical spa staff at Emerge Medical & Well Spa are highly trained to use the most effective and advanced treatment methods. And don’t let the word “toxin” scare you, because BOTOXⓇ only uses a small amount that is perfectly safe when used by our trained staff.

As with any injection or drug, BOTOXⓇ comes with some minor risks like headaches and pain at the injection site. But treatment is tolerated well in an extremely high number of patients, and only a small number of patients see these side effects.

Did you know that Botox treatments can reduce the oil production that causes acne to develop on the face? It’s true! Even small doses of Botox can help to reduce the appearance of acne and the oily skin that causes acne in the first place. Common Myths About BOTOX®

A Few Common Myths About BOTOX® Treatment

Common BOTOX® myths.

At Emerge Medical & Well Spa, we provide a wide array of different skincare, anti-aging and relaxation services to clients all over Tulsa and beyond. As one of the premier providers of up-to-date and innovative skincare solutions, we also understand that people often have misconceptions about certain treatments. BOTOX® is probably one of the most commonly maligned treatments available.

But, is there really a reason to avoid getting BOTOX® treatment? Is BOTOX® really dangerous? What are the real side effects? In previous blogs, we’ve looked at myths about laser treatments and tattoo removal. In this entry, we’re going to bust a few myths about BOTOX®.

It Freezes Your Face

The biggest BOTOX® myth to get out of the way is that it fixes your face in a permanent, emotionless expression. If you’ve told people you’re considering this treatment, you’ve probably had at least a couple of responses relating to a particular celebrity having a “frozen face” from it, and how you should avoid it.

Like many other cosmetic treatments, this myth came from a handful of famous cases of celebrities overdoing it, and is far from reality. In truth, the results of the injections only last 3-6 months. The “frozen” look that people talk about it also a result of overdosing on it. While it does reduce muscle movement, it doesn’t eliminate or fundamentally change it.

Professional treatment will reduce wrinkles and blemishes, but still leave you with regular muscle movement.

It’s Toxic

Another common myth about BOTOX® is that it’s toxic. Unlike the first example, this one is a little less cut-and-dry. While the substance is technically a neurotoxin, it isn’t one that is dangerously toxic in the quantities used during cosmetic treatments. This neurotoxin – called clostridium botulinum – is found in our natural environment, and is inactive in everyday quantities.

Treatment Is Painful

This myth has more to do with your own tolerance for needles more than the treatment itself. The reason that this treatment is so popular is the speed and general painlessness of it. Many people who have had this treatment think of it as something that can be done on a regular lunch break.

This is because needles used in this procedure are extremely fine and small, and cause far less pain and discomfort than a typical shot. Combined with numbing creams, this is why the treatment is often characterized by those who have had it as a quick, in-and-out procedure.

People Who Get Treated Are Vain

This one’s a little harder to tackle since it’s a little more personal. Sadly, many cosmetic procedures are still characterized as an exercise in vanity by those who get them. Again, this is a misconception.

While this treatment can certainly be done for purely cosmetic reasons, it’s also been applied to medical issues such as excessive sweating, chronic migraines, eyelid muscle spasms and much more. Not only that, but minor cosmetic adjustments are not entirely driven by vanity, and looking to improve or retain a youthful look is not something you should feel you have to hide.

When I First Tried Botox

Do you remember the first time you heard about Botox? I do. I was a teenager. I’d hear about it while watching my favorite movies or TV shows or reading magazines depicting how awful it was, how it would freeze your entire face and make you look even worse.

Ring any bells? I thought, “Who would ever do this to themselves? Why would you want to alter your appearance like this or freeze your face?” I swore right then and there I would never do anything like that.

I mean good grief Hollywood, get it together.

But then, I was 28 and the line between my eyebrows had made itself a home. I hadn’t told anyone how self conscious I was about it, I just…lived with it.  At the time I was working as a receptionist at a medical spa in Georgetown, TX and our nurse was taking Botox appointments.

My 40 year old coworker next to me stood up and said “It’s my turn!” I paused and said to myself, “wait…what?”

When she returned she had a few tiny pin marks on her forehead. I asked, “You get Botox!?!” “Of course,” she said, “I have for years.” I went on to ask her what it was like and how it worked and eventually got up the courage to point out the line between my brows and told her how self conscious I was about it.  She was confident that Botox was the answer and begged me to try it.

Remembering everything I had heard about it, I still wasn’t sure I was ready to take the leap.

A week later I thought, what the heck, I’ll try it. Obviously vigorously massaging my frown lines at night after a hot shower wasn’t doing me any favors, so this might be the golden ticket. Luckily my best friend was visiting so I convinced her to come along. I was a bundle of nerves. My palms were sweating. I had no idea what to expect.

When I finally made it to the treatment room, after discussing my “problem areas” the nurse was very kind and gentle as she began my treatment. Suddenly, there was a pinch! To distract myself from the needle going into my forehead I began asking her random questions like,  “aren’t puppies like so cute?”

After about 5-7 pricks, it was over. I was a little sore and other than a small headache I felt fine.

When I got home I immediately looked in the mirror to see if it was frozen yet. Nope. (It can take up to 2 weeks to kick in) I continued to check each day until about day nine when I noticed my lines no longer appeared when I frowned. Score.

Here are my real results about 9 days after my 1st treatment of 30 units. I know you can’t really tell, but I was making the exact same expression in both pictures, honest. Look at the frown on the far left; I could have held a pencil in my glabella!  And check out the picture on the right, I mean c’mon! Those wrinkles are gone, baby! You might have noticed my eyebrows, how they’re a little uneven, but the nurse fixed me up, I just didn’t take a picture. Another bonus, higher arches!

Not a day goes by that I don’t thank my co-worker for giving me the push I needed to try this treatment. It has given me back my confidence and stopped my aging dead in its tracks. To this day I get 30 units about every 3-4 months to keep my deep wrinkles at bay. It starts with prevention, folks. For all of you that have never tried Botox or sworn it off because of what you’ve heard, I urge you to give it chance if you have any insecurities about expression lines like I did. It was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made.

Let’s Talk Botox

Written By: Ric Harrison

Let’s get the boring stuff out of the way first;

BOTOX® Cosmetic is a highly purified muscle toxin, isolated from a certain strain of bacteria. The toxin blocks the chemical signal between the muscle and the nerve, leading to temporary paralysis of the muscle. The paralysis occurs over 1 to 5 days and peaks in two to four weeks. Results last from three to six months. The effect gradually wears off, allowing the dynamic wrinkle to return.

Botox is a prescription medicine that is injected into muscles and used to temporarily improve the look of both moderate to severe crow’s feet and frown lines between the eyebrows in adults. Side-effects are minimal for most people as long as you follow a few simple things. You need to refrain from lying down for about 2 hours after your treatments and wait several hours before doing any strenuous exercise.  Botox is the only FDA approved drug treatment option for crows feet and frown lines. The FDA approved Botox in 2002 for the temporary improvement of wrinkles between the eyebrows, known as frown lines in adults. Botox is a product of Allergan.

Now for the interesting stuff!

I first had Botox when in was in my late 30’s. Usually for a special occasion and I wanted to look a bit firmer (really a bit younger), know what I mean? Now that I’m in my early fifties I have Botox done on a regular basis (about every 3 to 6 months). I have never looked better and others have told me so.

Taking care of ourselves as we age is so important. Eating healthy, exercising and getting enough sleep are good ways to take care of our bodies. I’ve found that Botox not only makes me look better but also gives me a lift in my self-image. The better I feel emotionally; the better I care for myself. A little help from Botox is just the shot (injection) that I want. It’s the whole package for me.

For the next couple of months, I’ll be blogging about Botox, facial fillers and injectables. Look for a new blog each week and let me know what you would like more information about. I’d love to hear from you.

Meet Ric

Written by: Ric Harrison

We’d like you to meet Ric, he’s a very close friend of ours that has agreed to share his journey through injectabes with all of you. Take it away, Ric.

Why I chose Emerge Medical and Well Spa.

Hi, my name is Ric. I’m in my early 50’s. I’m married and I’m Poppy to 3 precious boys ages 2, 4, & 6. I’m a professional in the medical field and I consider myself a happy person. The only thing I didn’t like was that I was aging and it showed.

I didn’t like those little lines around my eyes, the lines on my forehead, and the fat under my chin. These are just a couple of reasons I started considering injectables. In the last several years I had some Botox treatments (not on a regular basis) but I liked the results. I knew a little bit, but not enough. I had considered plastic surgery but didn’t like the cost, the risk or the downtime.

I decided to make appointments with a couple of different spas/treatment facilities in the area for interviews that offer the treatments I was considering. I chose Emerge Medical and Well Spa because they gave the best first impression and they appeared to be the most knowledgeable about what they were doing. I like the fact that the people doing the treatments were experienced and educated and I also liked the fact that they told me about the products, how they were made and what I could expect. They didn’t “promise” me that I would look 10 years younger or get the exact results I wanted but they did say they would work with me, to help me get to the best results I could with what I had to work with.  I haven’t been disappointed yet. I have not only become a happy client but I’ve made new friends.

The ladies that have done my facials, my lash extensions, given me Botox, Kybella, Juvederm have become a part of my life. I didn’t realize the vulnerability I would experience while receiving these services. We’ve talked about life, death, kids and just about anything else that came up. We’ve laughed and I’ve even cried as I told the story of my mothers’ recent death.

When I became a client at Emerge I expected (and received) excellent services and results, but what I also received was the unexpected surprise of more inner beauty and that is priceless.

Welcome To Our New Blog

Welcome to our brand spankin’ new blog! We’re happy you’re here. You look beautiful today.

Being that we’ve had a few requests to start a blog, we thought we’d give it a shot. We hope as you follow along you’re able to see our love for medical aesthetics and day spa services, as well as learn from our own personal experiences and take away tips and tricks on the latest in health and beauty.

As some of you may know we are an award-winning staff with some pretty impressive knowledge (with certificates to back them up) however one thing we are not is professional writers, so keep that in mind as you read each one. Lol.

For almost the last ten years we were a Medical Day Spa located on the corner of 91st and Sheridan in South Tulsa but now, hold on to your knickers, we have TWO locations.

The new Emerge Spa (and salon) at River Spirit Casino Resort just opened last week. I mean, you gotta’ see this place. It’s…incredible. I’m talking steam rooms, saunas, women’s whirlpool tub, full service salon, the works. You’ve never experienced luxury like this, but let’s get back on track here.

Listen, we’re about beauty, health and wellness. Period. We’re in this business for one reason. To make men and women of all ages feel and look their best and to give them the confidence they need and deserve.

We know what each of our clients are going through, we too are worried about aging and want to look as young as we feel. We get it.  And there’s nothing we haven’t seen. For real. We’ve got years of experience under our belts.

So, if you’re thinking “I’m embarrassed because I have *insert said skin condition here*,” don’t be. No judgment on our end, we’re just here to help.

So, let’s talk about what’s up next and that is injectables. Ahh, injectables. For some that can be a scary word, but for us it’s an exciting word with endless possibilities. We’re going to debunk any myths you may have heard about them as well as share some helpful information including what they’re made of, how they work and what you can expect from your treatment and results.

In the next twelve weeks you’ll hear from Belinda Stewart, one of our owners (alongside Taryn Schell). Belinda is also a Registered Nurse and Allergan Certified Injectable Trainer. You’ll also hear from Ric Harrison, one of our close personal friends and client and myself, Director of Marketing and Social Media. Thanks again for joining us and we hope you tune in each week to learn more about us and if we haven’t met you already, we hope to soon!
