Difference Between a Medical Spa and a Day Spa

Nothing beats a day at the spa. With a tranquil atmosphere and a focus on personal care, spas offer the chance to unwind, relax, and rejuvenate yourself. Yet, choosing a spa is not always easy, especially when the difference between a “day spa” and a “medical spa” is somewhat ambiguous. To clear up any confusion, Emerge Medical & Well Spa explains how they differ.

Day Spa

Day spas focus on relaxation, personal care, and beauty treatments. Services at a day spa can include massages, facials, mud wraps, waxes, manicures, pedicures, and more. Some spas may even include hair and makeup services as well, so you can leave the spa looking and feeling beautiful. Unlike medical spas, day spas do not offer any medical or cosmetic treatments, such as Botox and laser removal. Although they employ licensed massage therapists and cosmetologists, they do not have medical professionals on staff.

Medical Spa

Medical spas combine the personal care and cosmetic services found at day spas with medical treatments. These treatments typically focus on cosmetics, anti-aging, and skin care. Such treatments might include Botox, dermal fillers, and medical facial peels. Some medical spas, such as Emerge Medical & Well Spa, include additional services outside the realm of skincare, such as laser treatments and teeth whitening.

Keep in mind that these spas are not exclusive to medical services. Although medical treatments are available, you can still receive massages, facials, and other relaxing treatments you would find at a day spa.

Qualifications and Training

While both spas employ certified massage therapists and cosmetologists, medical spas also employ medical professionals. Several medical treatments, such as Botox, require the oversight of a medical expert to ensure the treatment is administered properly and any adverse side effects can be addressed. If you visit one of these spas, you may speak with a registered nurse or dermatologist.

Belinda Stewart, the clinical director at Emerge Medical & Well Spa, worked as a registered nurse for over eight years before joining the Emerge team and becoming an owner in 2009. She oversees all of our medical treatments, including Botox, dermal fillers, and laser treatments. Our staff also includes several registered nurses and a nurse practitioner.
