Plasma Pen: What is it and How Does it Work?

Emerge Medical and Well Spa in Tulsa offers plenty of non-invasive skin lifting procedures, but one of the most popular is the plasma pen treatment. Our clients love this treatment because it instantly tightens the skin and the results can last up to three years! Read on to learn exactly what it is and if it’s right for you.

What is a Plasma Pen Treatment?

The plasma pen is an advanced, non-invasive skin tightening and rejuvenation device. It works by transmitting concentrated nitrogen plasma gas, which causes superficial micro-injury to the epidermal plate and thermal modification of the dermal layer which stimulates fibroblasts. And what exactly does all that mean? Essentially, the plasma pen singes the skin, which causes fibroblasts–a type of skin cell–to produce more collagen, which in turn causes your skin to plump up. You can think of this process similarly to the way microneedling works, but instead of using little needles to trigger collagen production, in this case it’s the concentrated nitrogen plasma gas. You’ll see results instantly, but over the following 12 weeks collagen remodeling and elastin production occurs deeper in the skin.

Are there Side-Effects for Plasma Pen?

Overall, the plasma pen poses minimal potential side-effects, especially if done by a professional. Maybe you’ve seen the tik-tok trend of at-home plasma pens, but we don’t recommend this as a DIY treatment, as the procedure runs a risk of scarring, pitting and causing hyperpigmentation. The procedure could cause swelling for a few days, and may take between five and seven days to heal.

Who is the Plasma Pen Treatment For?

Since the plasma pen treatment is non-invasive, it’s great for just about anyone. It can help a whole slew of problem areas and will leave your skin looking tighter, brighter and lifted in no time. The plasma pen treats excess eye bags and saggy eyelids, crow’s feet, lip and forehead lines, crepey neck and decolletage, and pigmentation issues. Results can be seen after one treatment, but it may take a series of treatments to different areas to achieve your desired outcome.
